R-value measures resistance to heat flow, and higher is better. A basic uninsulated steel door offers almost none. A double-layer door with polystyrene panels lands in the middle range. A triple-layer door with polyurethane foam bonded between the steel skins sits at the top, and because the foam bonds to the panels it also makes the door stiffer, quieter, and more dent-resistant than its rating alone suggests. Here is the part most sales pitches leave out: the door is only one part of the envelope. If your garage walls and ceiling are uninsulated and the perimeter seals are shot, a high R-value door will improve things but it will not turn the space into a heated room. We would rather tell you that up front and spec a door that matches what the rest of the garage can support than sell you the most expensive option and let you be disappointed with it.
